The Pearl of the Argentario
Porto Santo Stefano is the vibrant heart of Monte Argentario, with its busy
harbour, sea-view terraces, and the unmistakable feel of a top-tier marina. The
main town of the Monte Argentario municipality, it is the departure point for
ferries to the islands of Giglio and Giannutri, and a favourite destination for
sailing enthusiasts and lovers of fresh seafood.
The historic centre retains the charm of a fishing village that has grown over
time, with its shops, seafood restaurants, and characteristic waterfront. It is
well worth climbing up to the Spanish Fortress for a panoramic view over the
entire Orbetello lagoon and the Argentario headland.
From Hotel Le Querciolaie dei Ricci, Porto Santo Stefano is around half an hour
away along the road that crosses the tombolo and skirts the lagoon — a journey
that is already scenic in its own right. The hotel is a comfortable and peaceful
base from which to explore the Argentario without giving up the tranquillity of
the Maremma countryside.
