The Tuff City
Perched on a spur of volcanic tuff, Pitigliano is one of the most evocative
villages in the Tuscan Maremma. Its buildings seem to grow directly from the
rock, creating a landscape unlike anything else in Tuscany — a place known as
"Little Jerusalem" for the historic Jewish community whose ghetto can still be
visited today.
Wandering through the old town, visitors discover the Cathedral of Saints Peter
and Paul, the Orsini Palace with its civic museum, and the network of Etruscan
sunken roads carved deep into the tuff — shaded, atmospheric corridors that can
be explored on foot or by bike.
From Hotel Le Querciolaie dei Ricci, Pitigliano is around one hour by car: the
ideal distance for a day trip combining history, architecture, and landscape.
The hotel makes a perfect base for exploring the Tuscan Maremma at a leisurely
pace, with a welcoming and well-situated property to return to at the end of the
day.
